SOCIAL MEDIA IS ONE OF THE MAIN WAYS OF COMMUNICATING AND STAYING CONNECTED TO OUR FRIENDS, FAMILIES AND COMMUNITY – AND RIGHT NOW, IT’S MORE IMPORTANT THAN EVER. BUT, HOW MUCH IS TOO MUCH, WHAT ARE WE TAKING IN? AND MOST IMPORTANTLY WHAT ARE THE MESSAGES BEHIND THE PHOTOS, VIDEOS AND STORIES THAT WE SEE? IS IT TIME WE CULL OUR INSTAGRAM AND FACEBOOK FEEDS OF ANYTHING NOT SERVING US?
Here’s a list I wrote down today and if it didn’t meet the criteria I set… it’s time to go
Is it factual?
Is it inspiring?
Is it educational?
Is it genuine?
Is it positive?
Is it humorous?
I also think we need to re elevate what we use social media for. I know in the last month I’ve stopped replying to Facebook messages as there is so much time going between platforms and replying to people. BBR Instagram, Personal Instagram, Facebook, email and text. To be more efficient and spend as little time on screens as possible I’ve really tried to funnel everyone into one platform. I’ve also started the process of merging email accounts to save time going back and forth there. I have jumped on trusty old google and found that you can only unfollow 200 people per day on the ‘gram so if you’re heading in for a big cull be careful you don’t get your account suspended.
Now let’s focus on the good. There is so much content out there – but where is the good stuff? Where do we direct our time and where do we click and follow if we want to be educated, inspired, uplifted, motivated and connected. I’m going to give you the top accounts that I intentionally go to on social media to feel good. In no particular order…
Dr Jordan Shallow, Founder The Pre-Script
First, up for education, training, muscle building and knowledge is Jordan Shallow. He posts consistently, he put’s time and effort into creating quality content which can be seen across on Instagram post’s, stories and live videos and I can guarantee every time he posts something you’ll learn something (at least I do). Great for any gym goer that is interested in the science-based no BS approach, he also has pretty good humour and is the analogy king. I’ve been following Jordan for around three years now and he goes from strength to strength . There’s not many guys smarter than him on the world circuit at the moment so my tip would be when he talks, you listen. He also posts on his personal account. If you want more, head to the website www.pre-script.com where you can sign up for his programs and courses I have down his hypertrophy program, lower body overhaul and now into week 3 of a 16-week online course he runs. They are all of the highest standard I’ve seen from any coaching organisation. Also, check out their podcast @rxdradio
Ben Pakulski, CEO Muscle Intelligence
Next on my list is Ben Pakulski. Ben’s account is also full of knowledge, recommending great new books and links to some great training programs. The main reason I head over to Ben’s account is to get all the latest on his podcast which I can’t recommend highly enough to anyone that wants to be BETTER in life. Ben has now retired from bodybuilding at the elite, world-class level so you do get a good insight to training, nutrition and supplementation but his knowledge on other aspects of life is what intrigues me the most. In my opinion, he is one of the most knowledgable, well-rounded coach and human getting around. I personally owe a lot of my success to Ben as I’ve used his programs for years and never really felt I progressed or made any “gains” until I started to implement his teachings. So if you’ve worked out in our BBR gyms the programming you are doing is pretty much everything I’ve learnt from Ben. #forevergrateful
He also podcasts at @muscleintelligencepodcast.
Kerwin Rae, Entrepreneur and Business Strategist
For motivation, I always head back to Kerwin Rae who is an Aussie bloke I resonate with a lot. He is a genuine bloke on a mission to help business in Australia and around the world, and he knows his stuff. If you ever feel like you need to “level up” or hear it as it really is, then head over to his Instagram feed and read some of his quotes. He can pick a victim mode storyteller from a mile away. There’s no BS here just business and real-life motivation.
Dr Joe Dispenza, Researcher of epigenetics, quantum physics & neuroscience and New York Times best selling author
If you like meditation, talk about how the brain works and how to rewire old habits then this Joe Dispenza is your guy. I’ve read two of his books Breaking the habit of being yourself and Becoming Supernatural and they both opened up my mind to a new way of thinking. If you feel like you need a bit of a shake up and have some spare time on your hands I highly recommend Breaking The Habit Of Being Yourself. He also has some free meditations on You Tube. A great place to start would be a podcast he did with Aubrey Marcus titled How To Create The Future You Want.
The 02 Awakening.
Now I have a few more I could post up but I’ll end it with a crew I spent two days with recently called The O2 Awakening, which was a two-day full immersion into breathwork, meditation and journalling. I had been following one of the owners @Lukismac for a while as I had a friend who did some private work with him and he couldn’t put into words how it made him feel. So I was in… and my mate was right. I’ve done private and group breathwork classes before but being in a room of 50+ people (pre-COVID-19 of course) was intense, amazing and even life-changing. After every breathwork session I do, I always feel I come out slightly different. After being guided into your breath, turning inward and asking a few questions it can seriously change your state instantly. Throughout the journey, you travel through so many different emotions and you really embrace lots of different parts of you. What I find so beneficial is the way I can catch my judgemental thoughts about myself, then ask myself, is this real? Has this happened or is it going to happen? What would happen if it did happen? After pulling yourself out of the BS stories, you usually end up realising that we can get so emotionally affected, worried, worked up and anxious over events that haven’t even happened or in all likelihood, will not ever happen. You realise you’ve been running these BS stories too long. Once you have this realisation you become empowered, enlightened and more confident to take on any situations or overcome fears and self-sabotaging behaviours you have run for too long.
When we are back in action on the gym floor, we will absolutely host some breath work sessions again so you can experience this for yourself.
If you are feeling in need for some motivation, positivity or a few words of encouragement, call me or email me and we’ll have a chat about how to get you on track for making some really exciting change. While the COVID-19 throws at us some challenges (with how our gym has changed multiple times with the restrictions, I’m the first to admit this!), it’s also an opportunity for us to ask what do we want our lives to look like?
